There was this old TV show called Cheers, whose premise was that people loved to hang out at a place where everyone knew you by name and cared about you. Their theme song went: “where everybody knows your name… “. Although such a place on the show was a pub / bar with the same set of characters and nothing really happened… in real life, you may call such a place “home”.
As we leave Hyderabad*, it’s becoming clear that in one sense, this is a home to us. Some time each day, unannounced, our brother will pop up, grab a chair and sit down to chat. Nothing big – just a stream of consciousness kind of conversations. We may laugh about instances in old movies like Mayabazar Our best friend shows up (again, out of the blue) with fruits, since he just happened to be at the Farmers’ Market and found fruits that he knew we’d enjoy.
Where is YOUR home? Where do you feel comfortable?
Who does this, anymore? Where’s the opportunity for such caring and unplanned interactions, in the busy life of a city – whether in the US or in India? Sure, we’re friendly with our neighbors… and sure, we do have loving interaction with family and friends over a weekend. Here, we’re talking about the loving spontaneity.
Where is YOUR home? Where do you feel comfortable? Where can you let down your guard, kickback and let down your hair? Where can you be yourself – with no need for a ‘mask’? How do YOU define “home”? *This post was written while we were in Hyderabad. We have since been to Vizag, Cheepurupalli and have just arrived in Himachal, where we’re living in an Apple Orchard. More on that soon!
